Like to bike? Consumer specialty insurance and assistance company Allianz Global Assistance has compiled a top-five list of great spots for a biking vacation. As the winter months come to an end and with spring in the air, there’s no better time to start thinking about enjoying the outdoors. Whether you’re a professional or beginner cyclist, the spots below might just inspire a trip

1. Banff, Alberta, Canada

The gorgeous area of Banff National Park is sure to please the eyes (as it did Johnny’s). There’s around 120 miles’ worth of mountain bike trails in the park. Don’t have a bike? You can rent a bike from Bactrax or Banff Cycle. When you need a break from cycling, Allianz recommends the helicopter tour and a trip to the wolfdog sanctuary.

2. Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia is an incredibly walkable city. And along with that, there are many biking trails to choose from like the Schuylkill River Trail for a 27-mile ride from the Museum of Art to Valley Forge National Historic Park. If you’re looking for a shorter ride, check out the two-mile Cynwyd Heritage Trail. You don’t have to have a bike either. You can borrow a bike at one of many Indego bike share stations.

3. Mackinac Island, MI

Mackinac Island is excellent for biking because cars are completely banned from the island. How’s that for a hassle-free bike ride? The island is filled with places to cycle, and for when you’re tired of biking, Allianz suggests taking a horse-drawn carriage tour to relax.

4. Palisade, CO

In Palisade, Allianz suggests checking out the 25-mile loop known as the Fruit and Wine Byway, where cyclists can check out a nice view of Book Cliffs and the Grand Mesa. Be prepared to see many orchards, vineyards and farms along the way! If you’re a beginner, you can check out one of the many short-distance routes in Palisade. Once you’re finished biking, check out local farms and orchards like High Country Orchards or Talbott Farms.

5. Santa Fe, NM

The Turquoise Trail National Scenic Byway is a great bike ride, as is the Los Suenos Trail. Along these trails you’ll find the signature picturesque views that are so special to Santa Fe. You’ll even find detailed maps along the trails to help guide you.

It’s a great list, but these five are just a few of the many options to consider as you’re deciding where to plan your next ride. And of course, Allianz recommends travel insurance for biking trips, no matter where you go. To me, the peace of mind of travel insurance is worth it, especially when traveling on rough terrain or discovering off-the-beaten-path areas where an injury could quickly lead to a serious problem in the middle of nowhere. With a plan like one from Allianz, help is only a phone call away.
