Volkswagen Still Talking Technicalities in Definition of ‘Cheat’

Last we heard, Volkswagen's small loophole that it could technically skate through on the definition of "cheating" in Europe was fairly well closed. Last week, Volkswagen's chief in the UK asserted in a letter to British Parliament that the company may not have have technically cheated in Europe. "Volkswagen accepts that a defeat device was […]

Travel Video of the Week: Snowboarding with the NYPD

What do you do when New York City shuts down because of a blizzard that dumps 26 inches of snow? You jump in your Jeep Wrangler with several cameras (including a drone), a tow rope, and skis and snowboards. That’s at least what Casey Neistat and Jesse Wellens did. The result turned into a viral video of them skiing and snowboarding through Manhattan's almost-empty streets—and right through Times Square. They even played the video at last night's Rangers game!

H/T to Yahoo News.

Travel App of the Week: Reserve

Reserve screenshotIt's hard to pick the best feature of Reserve, a free app that posits—fairly—that it can be "your app for dining out." With Reserve, a night of eating out is simplified into a few easy steps, all of which you can swipe through on your phone. It's discovery, booking and payment (even splitting the bill) in one beautiful, intuitive app experience.

First, you can search for and discover great restaurants in your area. With the recent addition of Washington, DC, the app's catalog of restaurant partners includes more than 450 restaurants in seven cities (Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington, DC). All have been filtered to meet the Reserve team's strict criteria for food, atmosphere and service. In New York, for example, the options include James Beard Award-winners and Times picks (meaning many aren't cheap, but that's what comes with eating well in New York). As simply a way to curate a restaurant to-do list in your area, Reserve proves to be of value.

Once you've picked a restaurant to dine at, you can request a reservation there. You can set the parameters as tightly (must be for 8:30 pm) or loosely as you like (anytime available between 7 pm-11 pm)—and then, you can go looser than that. If you're unsure where you'd like to eat, or you simply want a reservation at whichever of three restaurants can accommodate your party, Reserve can handle it. Its clever concierge service does the work to get you what you're looking for, keeping you updated via the app/text and even going so far as to recommend viable alternatives should your requested restaurant be fully booked.

And so with whatever assistance you've requested, once you have a table, you're set up show up to eat and drink at your reserved time. You dine, you have a great time (or maybe you don't, in which case you have the option of providing feedback that goes directly and privately to the restaurant for application), and then you pull out the app again to pay. Because you've linked a form of payment to your Reserve account, you can simply swipe a few times and get out of there. If you're dining with other Reserve users, you can even swipe to split the bill in any of all possible configurable divisions—which in the end, might be the best feature of all.

Volkswagen’s Small Crossovers – Not New Golf – Are Probably Headed to Geneva

Volkswagen may bring to Geneva two new small crossovers to complement its aging crossover lineup —including a production version of the T-ROC Concept it showed off in Geneva two years ago — Autocar reported (via Car and Driver). The T-ROC and reported T-Cross would both be MQB-based crossovers. The T-ROC is Golf-sized and much more […]

Travel Tip of the Day: Don’t Always Trust Siri

Diamond Head

Don't Always Trust Siri

While in Hawaii over New Year’s, Natalie and I wanted to climb Diamond Head for the sunrise as we have in the past (see: how to have a perfect morning in Waikiki). But since I know things change frequently, I didn’t want to walk all the way there only to have to wait until the park opened. So I asked Siri what time Diamond Head Park opened, and she gave me a time that didn’t seem right (7 am). So I then called my concierge at the Moana Surfrider who confirmed the park opened at 6 am.

I love my iPhone, but the moral of this tip is to not always trust Siri—especially when it comes to opening and closing times.

BTW: Diamond Head was an absolute zoo at sunrise! There had to be over 500 tourists (mostly Japanese) already at the top when we arrived.

Jeep Pickup, Jeep Compass and Jeep Renegade: All The Things We’ll Probably Hear Tomorrow from Sergio

On Wednesday, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne will update investors on his long-term plans and fourth-quarter profits — namely, how many Jeeps it sold — during his scheduled earnings conference call.
