Put the Person with the Best Upgrade Chances in the Middle Seat
If you hold elite status, you know that one of the best perks is the chance of getting upgraded for a fraction of the cost…or even for free, depending on your status and the airline. Oftentimes you can upgrade one companion on your reservation, as well. However, there aren't always two upgrades available, so if there’s just one left on a flight, the person with the status gets the upgrade and the companion is stuck in coach.
You can almost always give your upgrade to your companion but to ensure that the person in coach isn’t stuck with a middle seat, sitting next to a stranger, it’s very important to put the person with the highest upgrade chances in the middle seat and the companion in the coveted aisle or window (if the plane is configured 3×3). That way, if the elite frequent flyer gets upgraded and their flying partner doesn’t, the partner won’t be stuck with a bad seat.
