Travel Tip of the Day: Think Twice Before Booking Jetskis or Watersports

Debbi and BillThink Twice Before Booking Jetskis or Watersports
As I've noted before, the UK government does a great job sharing travel advice and news regarding safer and smoother international travel. Recently, in their Bahamas category, they posted a great tip about jetski and watersports operators in the Bahamas: "Before booking any excursion or activity make sure that health and safety precautions are evident and that the operator has adequate insurance cover. The water sports (sic) industry in The Bahamas is poorly regulated. Be careful when renting jet skis (sic) and other water sports equipment as many companies and individuals offering water sports activities are unregistered. People have been killed or seriously injured using jet skis and other watercraft carelessly, or by the reckless behaviour of others."

It might seem to go without saying, but it's important to note that when you book an activity like jetskiing, you're putting your health and even your life at risk, and you should remember that US/western safety standards don't apply everywhere. This applies in the Bahamas and throughout the Caribbean as well as anywhere in the world that you might think to book an adventurous or physical activity. For help determining which operators are safe, check with your hotel, a travel agent, websites, and other established tourism entities (before the trip or on the ground). Be smart!

BTW: When you get travel insurance (which I recommend), make sure to read over your policy carefully as it might not cover certain activities—like jetskiing, for example. I have an annual plan with my sponsor Allianz, which you can read about here.
