Know the Local Helmet Laws

Cook Islands scooterWhen you ride a bike, scooter or motorcycle-anywhere in the world-safety is important. That's why I recommend wearing a helmet. It's the smart thing to do.

In some places, however, it's more than that; it's actually the law. In the Cook Islands, for example, where I once rented a scooter, “helmet laws are now in force” and “anyone using a bicycle, motorcycle or scooter must wear an approved helmet at all times,” according to this UK travel advisory. Now, the decision to wear a helmet there is no longer just a matter of your judgment.

The lesson: You should wear a helmet anyway, but in some places it's the law to do so-so find out first.
